A little bit of history

Nature is the greatest asset we have. This is our home.

The place where we invite you to stay has been around for more than a century. The southern part of the campsite, where you can now see a new house, in the last century was the most important trading point in the whole region.

Here, the locals used to bring their homemade produce for sale: milk, butter, meat products and organic vegetables. Residents engaged in in-kind exchanges, preferring to purchase only what was produced locally and not imported from elsewhere. The shop built here more than a century ago functioned until 1980. The town also had a post office, entertainment areas and other socialisation spaces without any negative impact on nature.

In 1980, Thorleif Winther, Roald Bye, Harald Kaspersen and Bjarne Kaspersen founded a campsite called Sørkil Fjordcamping. For many years, it has been a popular spot among travellers who have been looking for peace and tranquillity, who love and breathe nature. Athletes, amateur fishermen and professionals also actively visited the campsite. Not only in Norway, but all over Europe, the word has spread about a retreat where man and nature are in harmony, a place where you can forget your worries and immerse oneself in peace. Time went by, people changed, but the need to be as close to nature as possible has remained.

Our aim is that this campsite continues to attract people from all over the world. Those, who understand that nature is our home and that it is important to rest in a way that does not leave a negative influence on it.

Recreation and sustainability are our priorities

Base Camp Hamarøy priority is to offer a refuge to people looking for peace and quiet combined with physical activity. It is a zone of comfort for people who love nature and care about where we live.

At the campsite, we combine every little detail to make it sustainable. It is important to us that we can contribute to the conservation of nature. For this, we employ different methods and instruments. From our visitors, we expect a responsible approach as well.

We can safely say that our intention is to offer entertainment that helps not only people to rest, but also to preserve natural resources. That’s why we choose our vendors responsibly, both in terms of reconstruction we do, and, of course, the details of our day-to-day decision-making. Everything is primarily done in such a way that the impact on nature is only positive or neutral.

  • During the summer, we make the most of the solar power plant. Therefore, the energy we receive comes mainly from a renewable sources.
  • We are very excited about the waste sorting system! It allows us to give a second life to seemingly unwanted and unnecessary items.
  • Of course, we use environmentally friendly cleaning, hygiene and other products to carry out daily tasks. We understand that little things make the whole, so we pay a very close attention to each of them.
  • Also, we encourage visitors to promote the “catch-and-release” fishing. The aim is not to catch more than you can eat.
  • We support the Fiskeridirektoratt rules for recreational fishing.

We believe, the sustainable use of natural resources is one of the most important things in life everyone should consider. Our dream is to see even more sustainably-minded people visiting our campsite.

Let’s respect. Let’s admire. Let’s protect.
